Pediatric Myofunctional Therapy in St. Petersburg, FL

Helping your child breathe, sleep, and eat better.

Specialized care for mouth breathing, tongue thrust, sleep concerns, and tongue tie. Serving St. Petersburg and the greater Tampa Bay area.

Were you referred by a dentist, ENT, orthodontist, or pediatrician?

You’re in the right place. Most of our myofunctional families come to us this way. Bring any notes, evaluations, or imaging from the referring provider to your first appointment, and we’ll take it from there.

Signs Your Child May Benefit From Myofunctional Therapy

Maybe your child:

  • Breathes through their mouth, even when calm or sleeping
  • Snores, grinds their teeth, or sleeps restlessly
  • Has chapped lips year-round
  • Rests their tongue low or pushes it against their teeth
  • Is hard to understand, or struggles to chew certain textures
  • Has been told they have an open bite, tongue thrust, or tongue tie

And when the house gets quiet, the bigger worries come in..

  • What if their sleep isn’t as restful as it should be?
  • What if the speech issues are connected to something I haven’t figured out?
  • What if this is shaping how their face, bite, or airway is developing?
  • What if we wait and these patterns get harder to change?

The earlier your child is gently retrained, the easier sleep, speech, feeding, and healthy mouth development become.

A Whole-Child Approach to Myofunctional Therapy in Tampa Bay

It’s confusing to hear that your child’s tongue, lips, or breathing pattern needs attention, especially when the concern touches sleep, speech, feeding, and dental development all at once.

After over eight years working with families in St. Petersburg, Gulfport, Clearwater, Tampa, and across Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties, our team brings something many clinics don’t: therapists trained in myofunctional, speech, and feeding, who routinely coordinate with the other providers already involved in your child’s care.

Helping with chronic mouth breathing, tongue thrust, low tongue posture, snoring and sleep concerns, pre- and post-frenectomy support, feeding and swallowing issues, speech sounds affected by tongue position, lingering thumb or pacifier habits, and orthodontic support is what we do all day every day…you don’t need to be the expert!

“My 7 year old daughter has been doing Myofunctional therapy with Andrea for a couple months now and I cannot say enough about how amazing she has been! My daughter looks forward to going every week and loves practicing because of Andrea’s encouragement. She works with her on every aspect of her speech all while making her comfortable. What Myofunctional Therapy Can Do for Your Child

With consistent therapy, families often see their child:

  • Sleeping quietly through the night with their mouth closed
  • Eating without losing food, gagging, or fighting textures
  • Speaking more clearly because the tongue and lips are doing their job
  • Growing into a face, bite, and airway that develop along a healthier path
  • Getting better long-term results from any dental, orthodontic, or surgical care already underway

Why Private-Pay Pediatric Physical Therapy?

Because we don’t bill insurance, your child’s care is shaped by their needs, not by what a policy will approve. That means:

  • No long waitlists
  • No referral required
  • Flexible scheduling around your family’s real life
  • Sessions in your home, daycare, community, or at our St. Petersburg clinic
  • Individualized care, not one-size-fits-all session models

This allows us to focus on what matters most: your child’s progress and your peace of mind.

Why Early Myofunctional Treatment Matters

Unlike some concerns that resolve with time, myofunctional patterns tend to become more entrenched. Research and clinical experience point to a few specific reasons not to wait.

Craniofacial growth happens around these patterns.

The bite, palate, and airway develop along whatever the current oral resting posture is.

Orthodontic results are harder to keep.

Braces and expanders move teeth, but without retrained oral muscles, teeth often shift back.

Sleep-disordered breathing can persist even after tonsil or adenoid surgery.

When the underlying oral patterns aren’t addressed.

Frenectomy outcomes depend on what happens before and after the procedure.

Not just the release itself.

If something keeps catching your attention or if a provider has already flagged it, that's the moment when therapy is most effective.

Myofunctional Therapy FAQs

What is myofunctional therapy?

A specialized therapy that retrains the muscles and resting patterns of the face, tongue, and lips to support healthier breathing, swallowing, chewing, and speech. It’s sometimes called orofacial myofunctional therapy or OMT.

My dentist (or ENT, orthodontist, pediatrician) referred us. What do we do next?

Book a free 15-minute call. Bring any notes, evaluations, or imaging your referring provider gave you. We’ll review what they shared and confirm the right next step.

Do you communicate with our other providers?

Yes, with your permission. We routinely coordinate with pediatric dentists, ENTs, orthodontists, surgeons, and pediatricians so everyone is working toward the same goal.

My child has a tongue tie. Do we need myofunctional therapy before or after the release?

Often both. Pre-release work prepares the muscles for the new range of motion and often is the foundation for the best results from the procedure. Post-release work helps the tongue learn to actually use it. Many surgeons require myofunctional support before they’ll perform a frenectomy.

How is myofunctional therapy different from speech therapy?

Speech therapy focuses on communication and sound production. Myofunctional therapy focuses on the underlying muscles and resting patterns of the face, tongue, and lips. They overlap, and our therapists are trained in both.

At what age can my child start myofunctional therapy?

Most children begin between ages 4 and 12, when they can actively participate in exercises. True myofunctional therapy requires that a child understand and actively participate in what we ask of them. However, we can still support younger children with related feeding and oral function concerns through other approaches.

Will my child need to do exercises at home?

Yes. Progress depends on consistent at-home practice. We coach families on simple, age-appropriate exercises that fit into daily routines.

How long does myofunctional therapy take?

It varies by age, starting point, and what we’re addressing. Some children make meaningful progress in a few months; others benefit from longer support. We’ll talk through realistic expectations at your evaluation.
